Volunteering

Mitraniketan offers volunteering opportunities to students, social workers, educationalists and others interested in lending a hand to developing and realizing the ideas of the projects with in Mitraniketan. Currently there are opportunities to explore and help in fields such as personal development, women's empowerment, technology, agriculture and horticulture, academic subjects, health, sports etc. Here volunteers from India and abroad work together instructing and learning from the students and each other. The common means of communication being English, language teachers are heartily welcome, but doctors and nurses are also in great demand.

Volunteers can register all year around, and serve for any length of time. The Education programmes are closed for summer holidays (during the months of April and May). The monsoon months of June and July are cool and enjoyable, with intermittent rain.

Volunteers who need board and lodging facilities need to pay a nominal charge of US$ 10 per day.

Volunteers are accommodated in the guesthouse, a two story building with several rooms and a cantina for larger groups. The rooms contain a bed, a desk and stool, and most rooms have their own balcony and bathroom with either a toilet bowl or a built-in toilet.

If you are interested in working with us at Mitraniketan, please contact Mr. Viswanathan, Director, with your enquiries at: kvmitra@satyam.net.in

Experiences of  Volunteers

Anna Marie, Denmark

Coconut, Rice, colorful Saries, Chai and green palm leaves among an endless number of warm smiles are first coming memories of my stay in Kerala. Living in the community of Mitraniketan and teaching in Mitraniketan People’s College is an experience I will never forget. If you come here as an open hearted and open minded individual there are so many things to gain. A working day for me in Mitraniketan would start at 6 a.m and I used to the yoga classes with the students. At 8.45 am, after having a very tasty Indian breakfast, I preferred to join morning assembly for both children and youth students. During the day I mainly taught Spoken English and Drama and interacted with both students and teachers. A 3 months stay is a valuable future investigation for not only exploring another culture but also to explore another way of living, thinking and learning. One can always read a book but the outcome is nothing when comparing to the real experiences of life.
